The 52nd Hague International Model United Nations was held from the 27th to 31st of January. Six students from high school second grade took part and were put in charge of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The theme of this year's conference was "Securing and Advancing Democracy ---Every voice matters!" All students actively took part, making speeches and asking questions. They were also able to make use of their limited free time to do some sight-seeing and visited the house of Anne Frank as well as the Amsterdam National Museum.
The committees the students took part in are as follows:
ECOSOC Removing social barriers that make women vulnerable to HIV and hinder their access to preventive and treatment services
ECOSOC sustainable tourism
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION Battling rising sea level
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION Improve maternal care and delay the age of first pregnancy
ENVIRONMENT COMMISSION Measures to reduce the use of single-use plastics
ENVIRONMENT COMMISSION The role of veganism in protecting the environment
Taking part in a Model United Nations provides an opportunity to see issues from various points of view. Students can also test their English ability in a high level environment.
