Kumon Kokusai Jr. and Sr. High School perceives the students' lives in the dormitory being as important as their school lives. The dormitories have a full time staff of teachers, nurses and some of their family members, who look after their personal lives as well as support their academic lives. The school principle of respect for students' autonomy and self-reliance also underlies the life in dormitories. The student committee members are fully involved in decision-making processes for dormitory rules or events along with the dormitory staff. The parents are well informed about their children's lives there through monthly newsletters or telephone counseling.

"I was excited and at the same time anxious about my life apart from parents when I started living here. When I went home after a while, my parents told me I had grown. I think it was because I was challenged and influenced by my friends in the dormitory." (A resident)

The students are free to go out on Saturday and Sunday. Some of them go home during weekends. Linen services are provided every Sunday.
